The scene opens as a father and son are on the phone talking while driving on what seems to be an empty road, you can hear how loud the car engine is and the wind blowing. It cuts to the next scene of the woman they are talking to, in a kitchen and immediately this scene feels less tense. You can hear birds chirping, the scenery of the kitchen feels calm and serene. The close shots of the father and son driving creates an on edge feeling because we’re not able to see the road or what’s going on around them. The camera then does a cut to the side mirror, you see another car coming from behind that cuts in front of them. The camera then goes back to a close shot of the father and son on the phone, which I feel is used to show the audience something is about to happen. The car in front does a lane change, leaving the driver (Shia LaBeouf) to respond quickly to the car that stopped in the middle of the road.
